You should listen. And pledge some support.

Theres even a dance party DJ'd by all TJU DJs at the Tea House on April 21st.

But mainly, Way tight shows. Full schedule isn't online yet, but paper copies should be starting to show up in various spots around town. Heres what the Beard Hour is doing to help:

Time to Face the Sun: Afrobeat and Highlife in West Africa, 1960-1980
Sunday, 4/15, 4PM - 7PM

In the 1920s and 1930s, Highlife Music was born in Ghana. It was a combination of African Jazz, Congolese guitar sounds, Palmwine, Cuban and Latin music, and Ghanaian big bands and army ensembles. The music would eventually spread into Nigeria, and become prominent as a result of musicians like E.T. Mensah, Al Haji K. Frimpong, Victor Olaiya and their bands: the Archibogs, the Akazas, the Top Modern Stars, The Lebartone Aces, The Dandies, The Ramblers, The Tempos, The Rhythm Fadakas, The Titibitis, The Melody Maestros, The Rhythm Skies, and the Inter-Reformers. Along with Highlife-spinoffs like Juju and Guinean swing, West African music in the sixties and seventies would produce some of the most memorable and amazingly talented musicians and recordings to ever come about, in the nations of Ghana, Nigeria, Guinea, Benin, and Gambia especially. In the 1970s, the sounds of James Brown and American soul and funk music filtered into West Africa, and an even greater dimension was added to an already fantastic mixture of sounds and influences, resulting in the birth of afrobeat on the streets of Lagos, exemplified by Fela Kuti and the superhuman drumming of Tony Allen, as well as musicians like BLO, the Apostles, the Funkees, and the Stooges-esque Ofo & the Black Company. Join Nate, Adam, Mike and John, on Sunday, April 15th, from 4 PM until 7 PM for three Hours of fantastic West African music from the sixties and seventies, and hear funk and soul music in a totally new and different way.

Go Chubby Boy: Two Hours of Mannie Fresh and New Orleans Hip Hop
Sunday Night / Monday Morning, 4/16, 1AM - 3AM

For almost Twenty Years now, Mannie Fresh has been at the center of New Orleans Hip Hop, starting around the age of ten as a member of New York Incorporated, one of the first New Orleans Hip Hop Crews. In 1987 he started working with rapper Gregory D. The partnership would be somewhat short-lived, but their work would help to lay the foundation for New Orleans Bounce, the Hip Hop style that would eventually dominate in New Orleans. Mannie Fresh's own aesthetic has mirrored that of Bounce, but he has managed to make beats and songs that always sound unique and iconoclastic, creating a distinctly Southern hip hop that nonetheless sounds far removed from the music coming out of Atlanta or Texas. He's managed to remain engaging and interesting for his entire career, using his trademark high hats and old-school New Orleans horn lines, as well as his always hilarious intros and outros, working mainly with Cash Money artists like Juvenile, Lil' Wayne, and B.G, but also UGK, T.I. Mack 10, Young Jeezy, and Trick Daddy. Join Nate on Sunday Night / Monday Morning, April 16th, from 1 until 3 AM, as we hear from one of the greatest producers ever, the man who helped to put his own vision of the bottom of the map on the map.

Set Me Free: A Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized Retrospective
Tuesday, 4/17, 6AM-8AM

Throughout their five year career as a band, Spacemen 3 covered pretty diverse ground, ranging from fuzzy psychedelic rock'n'roll, lengthy experimental pieces, bluesy garage rock, hushed, somber songs, and rushes of distortion, all of which culminated in the masterful 1987 record 'The Perfect Prescription.' Tensions within the band, primarily between the two main contributors, Jason Pierce, or Jay Spaceman, and Pete Kemper, or Sonic Boom, were already apparent at this point., and while Spacemen 3 would make it through a few more releases, Jay Spacemen would ultimately leave to form Spiritualized. This would be an equally important and impressive band, creating a kind of distorted British psychedelic gospel unlike anything else. Join Nate on Tuesday, the 17th of April, from 6 until 8 AM, as he pulls from the major Spacemen 3 and Spiritualized releases, as well as live recordings and side projects, for a morning of repentance and healing. The church of Jay Spaceman will be in session.

And, I'm finally doing a Silver Jews Show
Wednesday Night / Thursday Morning, 4/19, 1AM-3AM

I never got around to doing an official sounding plug for this show but you know the deal: probably my favorite songwriter and the soundtrack to my entire tenure in this town. Hear me wrap up five years of living in Charlottesville with two hours of the Silver Jews.

91.1, y'all. Or you can always listen online

Last Beard Hour Playlist

Growing - Onement - The Soul of the Rainbow and the Harmony of Light
Orchestra Baobab - Mouhamadou Bamba
Toumani Diabate's Symmetric Orchestra - Boulevard De L'Independance - Boulevard De L'Independance
Les Ambassadeurs Du Motel De Bamako - Mali Denou - Volume 1
Super Rail Band - Mansa

Basswood Lane - Ciabatta Bread
Devin the Dude ft. An old Beard Hour favorite but one that never disappoints.

Spiritualized - Intro - Live at Royal Albert Hall 1997
Spiritualized - Shine A Light - Live at Royal Albert Hall 1997
Unreal. Look out for the special edition of the Beard Hour marathon show featuring all Spiritualized and Spacemen 3 coming at you at 6 AM at some point in the vaguely near future. Sometimes I fear these bands are going to engulf me like they engulfed Joe, but I'm ultimately not one for melodrama, which is kind of like Jay Spaceman's primary mode of being as far as I can tell. This whole record is absolutely fantastic though.

Psychic Ills - January Rain - Dins
Why did I sleep on this band a year ago? This song is amazing and their guitarist sounds like he should be playing in a 1970s Nigerian highlife band.

Spiritualized - On Fire - Let It Come Down
Psychic Ills - I Knew My Name - Dins
Spiritualized - Don't Just Say Something - Let It Come Down
Woah too much.

Black Eyes - Deformative - s/t
I miss seeing this band all the time.
Oneida - Treasure Plane - Secret Wars

DJ Screw - Intro (Da Brat - Mind on my Money) - Headed 2 Da League Tape
Fuck, y'all. This is seriously so good. A lot of the time the Screwed and Chopped thing doesn't really do it for me, but this song kills it. The Nas version on this tape is pretty good also, as well as the 22 minute (!!) big pokey jam.

Trae ft. Pimp C, Fat Pat (RIP), Hawk (RIP) - Swang - Restless
Maybe the hip hop song of 2006 that I didn't hear at all during 2006, although Pimp C's verse sounds a little out of place. This shit is tragic in a profound sense, especially when you remember that Hawk and Fat Pat were brothers.

DJ Shadow ft. David Banner - Seein' Thangs
Mannie Fresh - Nothing Compares to Love - Mind of Mannie Fresh
Cedric Brooks - Words of Wisdom - Light of Saba
Star Band de Dakar - Malagena - African Serenades Vol. 1
Fred Mcdowell - Fred Mcdowell's Blues

Silver Jews - Punks in the Beer Light
Silver Jews - There is a Place
Silver Jews - K-Hole
Silver Jews - Trains Across The Sea
Silver Jews - Death of an Heir of Sorrows
Silver Jews - Room Games and Diamond Rain
Silver Jews - New Orleans
Silver Jews - Etc. Etc. Etc.

A Three-fer

Beard Hour Playlist 1.19

Planning To Rock - Have It All
T. Plus, a defense, I guess, of a genre that no longer needs defending but I still feel obligated to defend.

Top Ten of 2006:

Rich Boy – Throw Some D’s
T.I. – Bankhead / What You Know
Young Jeezy ft. Timbaland – 3 A.M.
Clipse – Hello New World
Cadillac Don and J-Money – Peanut Butter and Jelly
B.G. ft. Mannie Fresh – Move Around
Young Money / Lil Wayne – Ballin’
Rick Ross – Hustlin’
Bun B, Devin the Dude, FT – So Tired

I wasn’t too excited about anything hip hop related for the last couple of months, although that Clipse record got a lot more play than my critical engagement with it would admit, but I stumbled onto Rich Boy’s Throw Some D’s and was immediately right back there with it. I’ve been a pretty huge proponent of Southern Hip Hop since the minute I first heard it, mainly because I’ve always been a pretty huge proponent of the South in general, but listening to Throw Some D’s reminded me of everything great about certain strands of southern hip hop. Great synths, lush-as-fuck production, no sweat: It’s just ultimately so smooth. I’ve been pretty ok with some of the more recent Northeast hip hop records, namely the Roots and the new Nas, but in the end, Lil’ Wayne and Young Money sound a lot better riding on top of that We Fly High beat than Jim Jones does. Yankees just don’t sound right on southern-sounding beats. Sorry, y’all.

I was thinking recently about the fact that when I was eighteen and getting my mind blown by Illmatic that I had no idea that hip hop was being made at that time that was so totally wild and different from that minimal, grimy New York sound I was dealing with. I’m thinking of all the scenes in Houston and Atlanta and New Orleans that had been going on for years but were starting to gain some degree of prominence on the backs of people like Organized Noise and 8Ball & MJG and UGK. Compared to Nas, these dudes sounded, and sound, like they’re coming from outer space. I’ve been arguing for a while that modern southern hip hop is ultimately almost psychedelic, but that’s probably not too far out there of a claim. I’ll let 8Ball’s declarations that you better be smoking a swisha sweet filled with the stickiest of green speak for me. Those dudes basically sound like they could have been on Stax Records anyway, and have you seen that video for Lil Jon’s admittedly mediocre Snap Ya Fingers? Psychedelics aside, what’s important is that the turn towards the kind of lush and orchestral production, or even, minimal snap / Collipark bullshit that I don’t dig, or, even, the Timbaland craziness that I can’t get enough of, was something I wasn’t prepared for in the least. The level of creativity that would eventually emerge out of the South is effectively mindblowing, primarily on a production level, but also in the kind of holistic mc-with-producer track that the south does so well. I mean, the chorus on Ha kills me every single time, and it’s the product of basically the perfect relationship between Juvenile and Mannie Fresh, producer and mc. The wild thing is the amount of southern hip hop songs that have the exact same feel, songs that just sound so complete, production that matches so perfectly with mc and with hot southern days. There’s an ambiance to classic southern records, whether from New Orleans, Texas, or Atlanta, that I just can’t find in anything that doesn’t have thick Texan drawls or heavy synths or wild New Orleans handclaps.

John asked me recently why I liked Southern hip hop thing so much, and I think that it ultimately breaks down to the fact that I have a hard time imagining how anyone that’s not from the South can really appreciate Southern Hip Hop. I mean, I know its not really true, and that the idea that Southern hip hop is still a regional phenomenon is obviously not really the case, but its pretty heavy regionalism, at least aesthetically but also in terms of Gold teeth and heavy chevys and talking slow, holds out some kind of hope for stylistic distinction in terms of region and locality in music. There can be a tendency towards feeling like music is becoming increasingly homogenous, but Southern hip hop, whether in New Orleans bounce or DJ Screw and slow Houston Drawls or Chuck Brown covering Its Goin’ Down for over a half hour, proves that regional variation is alive and well and only growing increasingly diverse. And, I mean, Southern Hip Hop isn’t really all that new and exciting anymore, but every once in awhile, Throw Some D’s shows up and its hard to imagine listening to anything north of the Mason-Dixon.

Beard Hour Playlist 1.5.07

First of the New Year! I cannot even begin to imagine better songs. Discovering Franco is the second most revelatory musical moment of 2006.

Joe Cuba – ‘El Pito’
Who knew a salsa song could send you into a trance like this? Who knew that the combination of a whistle, a piano, a bunch of handclaps, some drums, a bunch of dudes chanting, and never going back to Georgia could make such an insanely compelling song? Oh, and the devilish laugh helps as well. Watching John and Adam feed this song into a processor and a barrage of noise and distortion was a fitting end to a very strange year.

Spacemen 3 – The Perfect Prescription
A little late in the game, I guess, but this record defined large portions of 2006 for me. Talking about authenticity in music is a little played out, but this record projects such a palpable feeling of absolute nothingness that its hard to feel anything but affected by it.

Quintron and Miss Pussycat at the Satellite Ballroom, Charlottesville, VA
I’m generally of the school of boring dudes who hate on any sort of showy-ness in rock-n-roll shows, but Quintron was easily the most entertaining show I saw all year. If only I knew what Quintron was pushing, I’d probably have come out a believer. (And I haven’t even started talking about the drum buddy.)

Kyuss – Welcome To Sky Valley
I’ve always loved this record, but flying through the Nevada desert with this blasting made it make sense in a totally different way. My vote for best rock-n-roll record of 1994.

Kohoutek / Little Howlin’ Wolf / EMT at DUST, Charlottesville, VA
DUST is where my particular vision of Charlottesville tends to coalesce, and this particular show was an apt expression. It started somewhere after 1 AM, was sparsely attended, and probably freaked the bands out a little bit, but there was a point, when I was reeling from moonshine and Little Howlin’ Wolf was squealing on his saxophone and Kohoutek were actually hitting that point in improvisational music where it sounds like the sounds are coming from outer space, that I could not have imagined a place I belonged more. Charlottesville at its absolute best.

Rick Ross – ‘Hustlin’
By all standards, a decidedly mediocre song, but what a song! Rick Ross swaggers through four minutes of Miami bass, synthesizer choruses, and overdubs of his own weak rhymes, but I’ve listened to it a hundred times and I’m still not sick of it. Most importantly though, Caleb and I listened to this song every morning of what was probably the best couple of weeks of this year, and its hard to divorce music from memory. Beeenzeees.

Chuck Brown at the Satellite Ballroom, Charlottesville, VA
The most fun show I saw all year.

The Body at DUST / Red Wizard too many times to count
One band that understands the virtues of unrelenting volume and simplicity, and one that continues to get more and more complex and exciting every time and I see them. Two bands that have never disappointed and kept getting better throughout 2006. Stay tuned for a special edition of the Beard Hour starring Red Wizard.

Salif Keita – ‘N’Toman’
More about newly solidifying friendships than anything really, but a fantastic song nonetheless.

Jim Waive and the Young Divorcees– Twice a month at Atomic Burrito, every month of 2006, Charlottesville, VA
The Young Divorcees are a well-oiled machine. If you live in Charlottesville and did not see Jim Waive in the last year, you have a very quick and easy resolution to make.

Silver Jews at the Grey Eagle Tavern, Asheville, NC
Finally. Despite Caleb not getting his sweet potato fries, this was probably the best place to see the Joos, and after waiting years to get a chance to see these songs played live, the Asheville setting proved to be near perfect. Almost the musical highpoint of 2006.

Ofo & The Black Company – ‘Allah Akbar’
The number one most revelatory musical moment of the year. I played this song largely by accident on the beard hour one night, and not only did it open me up to new ideas in music, but to a whole new continent. Imagine the Nigerian Stooges, with a guitar sound that sounds like someone is rubbing sandpaper directly on your brain. When the drums kick back in 2 minutes and 44 seconds into this song and all hell breaks loose, or at least continues to break loose, its like nothing I’ve ever heard save for Fun House. If all Muslim songs sounded like this I would have converted when I was sixteen. According to these dudes, God is apparently a pretty badass dude.

From the vaults Pt. 2

<img style="display:block; A TREE

So I'd like to briefly outline the official Beard Hour Cross Country Vacation Time Event, sponsored by White Toyota Corolla with brand new solid-gold clutch and aprox. 1762 cc's of raw, whining power (possibly for sale, in case your interested), before my brain suppresses, like, the last month entirely. So here it is in outline form, hopefully more pictures will make it up onto the site, but Nate has most of the good ones and I'm unfamiliar at the present with the features of PhotoBucket (don't ask). Also, this is best read while listening to the song Hustlin' by Rick Ross, which we started out practically every day listening to:

Seattle
-Juiced! Discovered the true power of Tony Lalanne's Epic Juicer© by creating the most unholy combinations of fruit/vegetables and practically kilos of garlic. Exactly as good/bad as it sounds.
-Honey Hole! Nate and I darkened the doorway of this fine establishment every single day that we were in Seattle. Mostly because we knew we could find it without problem.
-Boris! Nate just about fell asleep during their set, despite, like, being in the same room with the Japanese band. Doomriders opened. They are from Boston.
-Other stuff: thrown fish, arrested development 3 in its entirety, more juice, creme brulee by Fancy Kyle

Portland
-Cut a promo for the Beard Hour (produced by DJ THE SNAKE)
-Allergies!
-Burritos! I think we ate nothing but burritos for something like 8 straight meals. Also, found Emily Pitti (of Ctown) chilling outside of this one burrito place. Small world, or just good burritos in Portland? Definitely not the latter.
-Some other stuff I can't remember.

Redwood Forest/Sonoma Valley
-California Love! Drove through the tree etc... Bought a handle of Makers Mark for 29 bucks at a Rite Aid of all places (basically a legendary purchase, if these things mean nothing to you). Vineyards. Vintage convertible VW beetle. Huge trees. Living Stump (ask Nate). Etc...
-Unfortunately did not actually listen to the song California Love by Tupac, despite our numerous accapella renditions (also, wtf is with the weird vocoder'd outro on that song? does it make even the slightest lick of sense?)

San Francisco
-didn't see/do much. Went to PF Chang's China Bistro. Made the claim that I would never drink beer again, only whiskey.
-Had a beer like 3 hours later.

Death Valley
-Hottest! Driest! Lowest! place in N. America. All things that the Beard Hour fully supports.
-Cell Phone! Lost, in case your trying to get in touch. Lost to that harsh mistress the desert.

Grand Canyon
-Cold, rainy, almost couldn't see the Canyon at one point. But hey, you can't really complain when you're at truly the grandest of canyons.

Marfa
-Pop. 2000! But we met at least half of them. Saw Jenny Lewis and the Watson Freaks, I mean, Twins. Saw a bunch of ART, did not see the Marfa Lights.
-Might be moving to Marfa in 2007, stay tuned.
-Really too much to put up, but hopefully some of the pictures will make it up.

Abilene
-Visited family/friends, boring stuff for you, dear reader.

Little Rock
-Beer with Egg! Finally drank the oft-talked about beer with a raw egg dropped in it. Tasty. Did not have a burrito eating contest.
-Did not see Gary (and yes, I am shaking my head, Gary)
-Made the claim that I am only going to drink Peroni beer, if beer at all.

Memphis
-Sun Studio, Stax Museum, and Graceland!
-I'm getting tired so you'll have to imagine what we did in Memphis, besides listening to Three 6 Mafia and watching Sixteen Candles. Seriously.

Nashville
-Went to the super huge line dancing bar. There was no one there.
-Nashville has a full-scale replica of the Parthenon. Did you know that??

And then back to Ctown! Very excited to be back sortof, at least for the radio show: listen in this Thursday for the return of Beard 1 and probably alot of questionable trashy europop beatz. I'm not even sure if I'm joking about that.

Nate and I would like to thank the true sponsors of our trip, those that let use sully their domains with our, um, presence: Fancy Kyle, The Snake et al, Nan, Lucy B., Rachel+Chase, Mikey P., Incomparable Rebecca S., and of course the Granparentz. Apologies to those that my brain is missing, you know who you are!

<img src="http://i74.photobucket.com/albums/i249/natewithabeard/IMG_3226.jpg" border="0" alt="Photobucket - I trust it will be in capable hands.

Expect periodic updates on this from Caleb and I as we do some sort of beard hour west coast travel adventure, but I can't really promise any consistency. Imagine a really moving (and much slower!) version of the Melvins. Not that the Melvins aren't moving, but you know what I mean. "Old Glory" is sure to be playing in my head for weeks, and I have to admit that there is something pretty impressive about a band that can present such a moving emotional statement on first listen without soundig trite. Him and the man himself, as it were. As well as John, frequest Beard Hour listener, supporter and participant.

I'm hoping that y'all are listening to the new Akron/Family record because it is really something special. As well as that Good God! compilation. And the new TV on the Radio record. Desperate Youth, Bloodthirsty Babes was a little bit of a letdown after Young Liars pretty much knocked me down for quite some time, so this record makes me feel pretty good in a variety of ways. Best of the year, at the very least.

Overground Records recently put out three compilations of early anarchopunk and peace punk. Well worth the effort of tracking them down. Here is a review of the first one:

Anti-War’ is the first in the long awaited series of 1980’s Anarcho-Punk cds that will chronicle this integral part of the punk scene, and serve as the definitive guide to the Anarcho-Punk scene.

Compiled from recordings culled from heyday of the scene (1980-84), the bands include the leading lights of the scene (Zounds/Dirt/Omega Tribe) as well as many of the lesser known bands that were the life-blood of the scene, pro-active in arranging gigs, making fanzines, organizing benefits etc. (Psycho Faction/Political Asylum/Anti-System).

‘Anti-War’ has been lovingly compiled after many years of research and groundwork, not least finding the bands that in most cases split before 1984! So, having listened to over 1000 recordings from vinyl, demo cassettes, unreleased studio recordings and live gigs we finally settled on 23 tracks for the first volume, 10 of which are previously unreleased.

‘Anti-War’ perfectly captures the whole ecstatic energy of the era, with its diverse mix of spiky barbs and intense diatribes all based around the ‘Anti-War’ theme.

The Beard Hour will be guest dj-ing during the day for the next couple of weeks. Tune in on consecutive mondays, the eleventh and eighteenth, and hear how we clean up during the day. I'll be subbing for Black Circle Revolution, and you can always listen online.

Finally, Drakkar Sauna is playing at the Tea Bazaar tonight. You should come.

Beard Hour 9/1 Playlist

Trevor Dandy - "Is There Any Love?" - Good God!
